Excerpt from Selection and Proportion of Aggregates for Concrete The object of this article is to give a practical method which will enable any concrete constructor to make economical use of the best aggregates, so proportioning them as to give the maximum strength and density with a minimum amount of cement. Concrete under discussion is plain and not reinforced, for reinforced concrete, an over-cemented mixture is sometimes necessary, particularly in column construction. There is a theory that the strength of concrete depends entirely on the adhesion of the cement to the sand and stone. The writer cannot see any tangible reason for this theory as applied to compression strength, for which concrete is designed. Eliminating tensile strength from the mind, it would be possible to make a concrete with a hardening non-cementing material, which could be poured in between the particles of sand and stone so as to fill the voids. While this material would not adhere to the sand or stone, it binds around each particle and thus not only furnishes an arch action, but by its own strength keeps the mass from spreading. Portland Cement not only binds around, but also adheres to each particle of the aggregate. Therefore maximum density is maximum strength in a well balanced concrete of the best materials.
